MUSCAT, OMAN / RankWire.AI / – Oman’s overall electricity generation increased by 4.3% year-on-year through August 2026, reaching 37,481.8 gigawatt-hours. During the same period in 2025, output was 35,935.3 GWh. Data from the National Centre for Statistics and Information indicated growth across multiple governorates. The rise contributed approximately 1,546.5 GWh to the country’s total production in the first eight months. August alone saw production hit 5,743.9 GWh, up from 5,676.9 GWh in July.

Muscat Governorate experienced the most significant increase in total electricity output, with a jump of 204.8% compared to the previous year. Al Dakhiliyah saw growth of 44.1%, while Al Wusta’s output grew by 8.4%. Electricity production in North Al Batinah, South Al Batinah, and Al Dhahirah rose by 5.5%. Dhofar also recorded an increase, with electricity generation up 4.6% from January to August. These figures reflect widespread expansion across most regions captured in the national data.
In contrast, North Al Sharqiyah and South Al Sharqiyah experienced a combined decline of 16.4% in electricity output. Musandam’s production was 376.0 GWh, showing no significant change from the same period in 2025. The regional data revealed notable differences in electricity growth across Oman during this period. The National Centre for Statistics and Information categorized these figures as preliminary, covering electricity output through the end of August 2026.
Net electricity generation increases by 4.6%
Oman’s net electricity production rose by 4.6% through August to reach 36,463.9 GWh, compared to 34,871.8 GWh in the same period last year. This figure includes regional purchases made by the Oman Power and Water Procurement Company and the Rural Areas Electricity Company. Muscat again led with a 204.4% increase in net output. Al Dakhiliyah grew by 44.2%, while Al Wusta and Dhofar posted gains of 9.1% and 7.6%, respectively. Overall, net electricity generation increased by about 1,592.1 GWh year-on-year.
Net output in North Al Batinah, South Al Batinah, and Al Dhahirah increased by 5.4% compared to the previous year. Meanwhile, North Al Sharqiyah and South Al Sharqiyah saw a 16.6% decline in net electricity. Musandam’s net production was 368.0 GWh, with no significant change from 2025. The regional figures generally followed the pattern observed in total electricity production, with national net output remaining above the levels recorded in the first eight months of 2025.
Water production declines across Oman
Oman’s water output decreased by 3.5% through August 2026, totaling 330.65 million cubic metres. During the same period in 2025, production reached about 342.71 million cubic metres. Muscat experienced a 6.2% drop, producing roughly 128.07 million cubic metres compared to approximately 136.57 million. Water production in other governorates fell by 3.4%, totaling around 149.90 million cubic metres, down from approximately 155.19 million during the same period last year.
Dhofar was the only region to buck the national trend, with water output increasing by 3.4% to about 52.68 million cubic metres, up from roughly 50.94 million in the previous year. The latest utility data thus reveal contrasting trends for electricity and water during the first eight months of 2026. While electricity production expanded at both total and net levels, overall water output remained below its level from the same period in 2025.
