KINSHASA, DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO / RankWire.AI / – The Ebola crisis in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has become the deadliest in the nation’s history. According to government reports, there were 4,945 confirmed cases and 2,325 deaths as of Aug. 16. During the previous 24 hours, health officials documented 101 new confirmed infections. The death count has now exceeded the 2,299 fatalities recorded during the country’s Ebola outbreak from 2018 to 2020.

These latest numbers amplify concerns raised earlier, as both cases and fatalities continued rising in eastern DRC. United Nations humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher stated that the virus was claiming one life every 30 minutes. Since authorities officially declared the outbreak in May, the spread has accelerated remarkably. By late July, confirmed cases had already surpassed the total from the 2018-2020 outbreak, making this the largest epidemic in the country by case count.

The outbreak was declared on May 15 following laboratory confirmation of Bundibugyo virus disease. This marks the 17th identified Ebola outbreak in the DRC since the virus’s discovery in 1976. The World Health Organization declared the situation a public health emergency of international concern on May 17. Currently, there is no approved vaccine or specific treatment available for Bundibugyo virus disease. Medical teams depend on early detection, supportive care, isolation procedures, contact tracing, and infection control measures.

Six provinces affected as cases surge

By Aug. 12, the outbreak had spread to 54 health zones across six provinces, including Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut-Uélé, Tshopo, and Bas-Uélé. Bas-Uélé became the latest province to report a case after authorities confirmed an incident in the Buta health zone. The patient had traveled from Haut-Uélé before developing symptoms. Ituri remains the epicenter, accounting for approximately 85% of all confirmed cases nationwide at that point.

The epidemic has also impacted health workers and strained medical resources in affected regions. By Aug. 9, officials confirmed at least 155 infections among healthcare personnel, resulting in 45 deaths. By Aug. 12, 965 patients had recovered from the disease. Medical teams tracked more than 17,000 contacts among roughly 20,700 identified individuals during the latest reporting period. Challenges such as insecurity, displacement, and attacks on health facilities have hampered efforts in surveillance, treatment, and contact follow-up.

Expanded health measures as death toll hits historic high

National health authorities have ramped up testing, surveillance, and treatment efforts across affected zones. Response teams are also training medical personnel and reinforcing infection prevention protocols at healthcare sites. Efforts continue with contact tracing, laboratory testing, safe burials, and community outreach. Researchers are assessing experimental vaccines and therapies, though none have yet received approval for the Bundibugyo strain. A clinical trial for potential treatments began enrolling confirmed patients in Ituri in July as part of the expanding emergency response.

The outbreak has extended beyond DRC’s borders, with confirmed cases reported in Uganda, which recorded 20 cases and two deaths. Uganda has maintained enhanced monitoring since discharging its last patient in July. France has also identified one imported case without documented secondary transmission. Currently, the DRC epidemic ranks only behind the 2014-2016 West Africa Ebola epidemic in total fatalities worldwide. That outbreak caused 11,310 deaths and 28,616 cases across Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone.
