DR Congo Reports Record-Breaking 8,376 Confirmed Ebola Cases and Rising Death Toll

KINSHASA, DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO / RankWire.AI / – The Democratic Republic of the Congo has documented 8,376 confirmed Ebola cases along with 4,042 fatalities, according to the most recent data from national health authorities. This outbreak has become the largest and most lethal Ebola epidemic ever recorded in the country. By late September, infections had spread across 63 health zones in seven of the country’s 26 provinces. The escalating national death toll has kept the outbreak at the forefront of regional public health initiatives.

DR Congo Ebola outbreak reaches 8,376 confirmed cases
Health authorities track Ebola transmission across several provinces in DR Congo.

The epidemic involves Bundibugyo virus disease, a form of Ebola that has caused persistent transmission since the emergency began in May. Congolese officials declared the outbreak on May 15 following the emergence of cases in the northeastern part of the country. This marks the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s 17th documented Ebola outbreak since the virus’s discovery in 1976. Ituri remains a primary transmission hub, with additional cases reported in North Kivu and other provinces.

Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention Director-General Jean Kaseya has issued warnings about the potential threat to neighboring nations. Ongoing transmission and cross-border population movement have prompted regional health authorities to intensify surveillance and preparedness efforts. Uganda previously identified infections linked to the Congolese outbreak before concluding its own outbreak in August. Authorities continue to monitor cases tied to travel from the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

    Elevated regional threat persists

The World Health Organization assesses the risk within the Democratic Republic of the Congo as very high and considers the threat to neighboring countries as high. Factors such as population mobility, informal border crossings, and ongoing transmission are increasing the likelihood of cross-border spread. WHO recommends that countries bolster their surveillance systems, laboratory capabilities, and cross-border coordination instead of implementing unnecessary travel or trade restrictions.

The Congolese government, along with health partners, continues active surveillance, testing, contact tracing, patient management, and community engagement in affected regions. Efforts also focus on safeguarding healthcare workers and enhancing community access where transmission persists. Insecurity and population movement have complicated operations in eastern Congo, particularly in several affected health zones. Public health teams remain vigilant, tracking new cases while supporting treatment centers and local response efforts.

    International assistance strengthens response efforts

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot visited Bunia in Ituri on October 3, reaffirming France’s commitment to supporting the Ebola response. Between January and July 2026, France allocated 13.4 million euros for Ebola-related initiatives, including humanitarian aid, research, and health programs. During his visit, Barrot toured an Ebola treatment facility and met with officials involved in managing the outbreak. He also indicated that France would seek additional humanitarian funding through upcoming budget discussions.

Currently, there is no specific approved vaccine or treatment for Bundibugyo Ebola, making case detection and infection control central to containment efforts. Health authorities and research partners are assessing potential medical countermeasures, while frontline teams continue to isolate cases, trace contacts, and provide supportive care. The outbreak has already exceeded the scale of previous Ebola epidemics in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Authorities continue publishing updated case figures as surveillance and laboratory testing reveal new infections.
