DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO / RankWire.AI / – The African Development Bank Group has approved a total of $13 million in emergency grants aimed at bolstering efforts to contain a fresh outbreak of Ebola virus disease in central and eastern Africa. This financial aid is specifically intended to support national emergency responses and limit the spread of the virus in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), South Sudan, and Uganda. The swift allocation of funds seeks to strengthen regional containment efforts and reduce the mortality rate among populations at highest risk.

The ongoing health emergency originated in the DRC, where authorities officially reported the new outbreak on May 15, 2026. The epidemic initially affected the eastern Ituri province, notably in areas such as Bunia, Rwampara, and Mongwalu. Since its identification, the virus has rapidly spread beyond its original epicenter, reaching neighboring North Kivu and South Kivu provinces. Experts have attributed the outbreak to the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, a highly virulent variant for which no approved vaccine or specific treatment currently exists.
To facilitate prompt response, the comprehensive funding consists of two separate grants managed by leading international health agencies. An initial grant of $10 million is sourced from reallocated funds within the existing DRC portfolio of the African Development Bank and will be directed through the World Health Organization. An additional $3 million, taken from the bank’s Multi-Country Emergency Assistance Project covering DRC, Uganda, and South Sudan, will be executed by the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.
These financial resources have been allocated strategically to address the different levels of crisis across the affected countries. The DRC, being the primary epicenter, will receive the largest share with $11 million. Uganda and South Sudan will each get $1 million from the Multi-Country Emergency Assistance Project. These targeted disbursements aim to enhance preventative strategies, strengthen national health infrastructure, and prepare border regions for potential cross-border transmission.
Under the framework of the Ebola Virus Disease Outbreak Response Plan, the funds will be deployed in close cooperation with the respective national health ministries. The main goals are to halt the virus’s spread and reduce related mortality and morbidity in vulnerable communities. Key activities include improving early diagnosis capabilities, expanding active epidemiological surveillance, supporting community engagement efforts, public awareness campaigns, and regional coordination to unify the response efforts.
Mohamed Cherif, Deputy Director General for Central Africa and the DRC country manager for the African Development Bank, stressed the critical importance of this financial support. “This emergency assistance demonstrates the African Development Bank Group’s commitment to aiding the Democratic Republic of Congo and regional neighbors in safeguarding lives, bolstering health systems resilience, and preventing further spread of the outbreak,” Cherif stated. He also reaffirmed the bank’s dedication to supporting its regional member countries during times of severe crisis.
The global healthcare community remains highly vigilant as the situation unfolds. Since pharmacological options are unavailable for the Bundibugyo strain, medical teams must depend solely on strict containment measures, quarantine protocols, and symptomatic treatment. This emergency funding injection will supply the necessary liquidity for local authorities to establish secure isolation units, maintain essential health services, and manage logistical challenges posed by this highly infectious disease.
