BRUSSELS, BELGIUM / RankWire.AI / – The European Commission has finalized an agreement to acquire €2.1 million worth of PCR tests for the ongoing Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak. These open-platform tests will aid in infection detection and enhance laboratory capacity amid the emergency. The procurement was coordinated with assistance from the European Health and Digital Executive Agency. Shipment will commence in August, providing critical diagnostic supplies as health agencies tackle the increasing case numbers in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

EU expands Ebola response with €2.1 million PCR tests
EU diagnostic support expands as health authorities respond to the Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak.

The PCR testing kits will be delivered to the World Health Organization’s Hub for Global Health Emergencies Logistics located in Dubai. WHO will oversee their distribution to zones involved in the Ebola containment efforts. PCR tests are essential for confirming infections due to their ability to process numerous samples rapidly and accurately. Furthermore, they are compatible with existing laboratory infrastructure. Quick diagnosis allows health teams to identify infected individuals, provide proper care and isolation, and conduct contact tracing around confirmed cases.

This new procurement complements a separate European Commission agreement for €2.5 million worth of rapid molecular point-of-care tests and testing devices. These supplies will support the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention. Collectively, the two agreements increase the Commission’s diagnostic aid to €4.6 million. These initiatives form part of a broader European effort to respond to the Bundibugyo virus crisis, which is exerting increasing pressure on health systems in affected regions of Central and East Africa.

Diagnostic efforts expand as outbreak intensifies

By August 12, WHO reported that the Democratic Republic of the Congo had confirmed 4,665 cases and recorded 2,184 deaths. The outbreak affected 54 health zones across six provinces, including Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut-Uélé, Tshopo, and Bas-Uélé. WHO characterized this as the largest Ebola outbreak ever documented in the country. The organization also highlighted that intense transmission persisted, with interconnected geographic clusters fueling ongoing spread within affected regions.

On August 14, WHO maintained its highest national risk level for the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It classified the regional risk for neighboring nations as high, while other countries face a low risk. Following its second meeting of the International Health Regulations Emergency Committee, WHO issued updated temporary guidelines on August 24. These recommendations cover surveillance, case detection, infection prevention, clinical management, community engagement, and measures related to domestic mobility and mass gatherings.

European support reaches €493 million amid ongoing crisis

The European Commission announced it has allocated €493 million for emergency relief, vaccines, treatment, and health-security initiatives across the Great Lakes region and Uganda. European health authorities have additionally contributed to surveillance efforts, laboratory work, and preparedness activities during the outbreak. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control continues to assess the risk to Europe as very low, citing the necessity of direct contact with infectious bodily fluids and the low likelihood of sustained transmission within the continent.

The Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak remains classified as a public health emergency of international concern, a designation declared by WHO on May 17. Unlike the more prevalent Zaire ebolavirus, the Bundibugyo strain currently lacks an approved vaccine or specific treatment. WHO continues to stress the importance of surveillance, rapid diagnosis, isolation, clinical care, infection control, and contact monitoring as key strategies. The latest PCR procurement by the European Commission bolsters laboratory capacity for these efforts, while WHO and Africa CDC coordinate health responses with national authorities in affected and neighboring countries.
