KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA / RankWire.AI / – Malaysia has ramped up its preparations for increased heat and dryness as El Niño continues to intensify across the Pacific region. The Alliance for a Safe Community has called for prompt actions to safeguard water resources, public health, agriculture, and delicate ecosystems. Chairman Lee Lam Thye emphasized the importance of coordinated efforts among government agencies, businesses, and local communities. He highlighted that early implementation of measures could help ease the strain on critical services during extended periods of high temperatures and scarce rainfall.

Malaysia steps up El Niño response for dry months
Early El Niño action focuses on water security, heat safety and haze prevention.

MetMalaysia’s assessment on July 14 indicated the presence of moderate El Niño conditions. The agency expects this climate pattern to persist until at least April 2027. Currently, sea surface temperatures in the Niño 3.4 zone are 1.3 degrees Celsius above normal. Additionally, MetMalaysia forecasts that stronger conditions will develop from October to December 2026, with the possibility of reaching very strong intensity during this timeframe.

The country’s long-term weather outlook predicts reduced rainfall in several regions during the latter half of 2026. The most significant decreases are anticipated in July and August, coinciding with the southwest monsoon. Areas such as southern Peninsular Malaysia, parts of Sarawak, and eastern Sabah are expected to experience lower-than-average rainfall. Such drier conditions could heighten the risk of wildfires and haze, especially when open burning occurs. Nevertheless, heavy rains and thunderstorms remain possible during the monsoon season.

    Prioritizing Water Security

The National Disaster Management Agency has expanded its efforts to address hot and dry conditions. Since February, authorities have completed seven cloud seeding operations involving 27 flights across Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, and Sarawak. Three additional series are scheduled to support rainfall and reservoir levels. Fire and environmental response teams have been tasked with monitoring 83 sites at high risk of open burning. These initiatives are part of the government’s comprehensive El Niño strategy.

Water authorities are identifying dams requiring urgent repairs and evaluating additional groundwater sources for tube wells. Meanwhile, health and education departments are reinforcing guidance for schools and vulnerable populations. The safety alliance has also recommended measures to reduce water loss from aging pipelines, increase storage capacity, promote efficient irrigation, provide technical assistance to farmers, and enforce stricter controls on forest and peatland fires. Authorities continue to keep a close watch on water reserves and agricultural conditions.

    Expanding Public Health Guidance

Lee Lam Thye pointed out that seniors, young children, outdoor workers, and individuals with chronic illnesses are among the most at risk. He urged for broader public education on conserving water, staying safe in high temperatures, and preventing fires. Residents are encouraged to use the myCuaca app for localized weather forecasts, alerts, and official updates. Government agencies also monitor air quality, drought levels, fire risks, and temperature trends, which can help schools and workplaces make informed safety decisions on a daily basis.

The latest international climate outlook indicates an 81% chance of a very strong El Niño event from October through December, with a 97% probability of continuation into early 2027. Malaysia’s current preparations encompass water management strategies, cloud seeding initiatives, public health messaging, fire prevention efforts, and weather monitoring. The government continues to oversee these activities through various national and state agencies. Officials have advised the public to stay informed through verified updates and to conserve water during dry spells.
