Indonesia Implements B50 Biodiesel to Achieve $10.8 Billion in Foreign Exchange Savings by 2026

JAKARTA, INDONESIA / RankWire.AI / – Indonesia’s obligatory B50 biodiesel scheme is forecasted to save approximately 170 trillion rupiah, or US$10.8 billion, in foreign currency in 2026, according to the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry. This projection accounts for reduced expenditures on imported diesel fuel following the increase in the country’s national biodiesel blend. The initiative mandates that diesel fuel sold across the country must contain 50% biodiesel derived from palm oil. Officials highlighted that this policy boosts domestic fuel consumption while decreasing reliance on fossil diesel.

Indonesia B50 biodiesel to save US$10.8 billion in 2026
Indonesia’s B50 biodiesel mandate raises renewable fuel use and cuts diesel import needs.

Indonesia launched the nationwide B50 program on July 1 and officially announced the mandate on July 9 in Karawang, West Java. The new blend replaces B40, which contained 40% biodiesel and became the standard in 2025. B50 consists of equal parts fatty acid methyl ester, commonly known as FAME, and traditional diesel. The renewable component is supplied by palm oil, linking the fuel programme to Indonesia’s domestic plantations and processing industries.

The ministry compared the Rp170 trillion estimate with Rp133.3 trillion in foreign exchange savings under B40. It also anticipates that B50 will reduce fossil diesel consumption by roughly 4 million kilolitres. The government tasked state-owned Pertamina with managing the blending process and supporting distribution throughout the national fuel network. Fuel suppliers are permitted to utilize remaining B40 stocks until September as the market transitions to the higher blend.

B50 Policy Boosts Palm Oil Usage in Transportation and Industry

Indonesia projects that B50 demand will require between 16.7 million and 18 million kilolitres of biodiesel. The initiative will also consume an estimated 15.2 million to 16.3 million tonnes of crude palm oil. These figures surpass the 15.64 million kilolitres allocated under the B40 scheme for 2026. The increased mandate channels more locally produced palm oil into sectors such as transportation, industrial machinery, shipping, railways, and power generation.

Official estimates indicate that this program will generate an added value of 23.49 trillion rupiah for the crude palm oil sector. The government also notes that B50 can create approximately 2.1 million jobs across farming, processing, logistics, and fuel distribution. Additionally, the ministry estimates that the blend could reduce carbon dioxide emissions by up to 44.46 million tonnes. In comparison, the B40 standard was projected to cut emissions by 39.66 million tonnes.

Pre-Implementation Testing Confirms Feasibility of Wide-Scale Diesel Transition

Prior to the rollout, the government conducted extensive testing of B50 in various vehicles and equipment, including cars, trucks, mining machinery, agricultural tools, trains, ships, and power plants. Automotive testing involved covering over 50,000 kilometres for lighter vehicles and more than 40,000 kilometres for heavier ones. Mining equipment was tested for around 1,000 operational hours, with no significant engine issues linked to the fuel quality. The ministry confirmed that the tested fuel complied with government standards and the technical specifications set by vehicle manufacturers.

Indonesia has progressively increased its biodiesel content requirements over nearly twenty years. Starting with B2.5 in 2008, then B10 in 2013, B20 in 2018, followed by B30 in 2020, B35 in 2023, and B40 in 2025, before reaching B50 this year. Each increment has been accompanied by updates to fuel standards, production capacities, storage, transportation, and distribution infrastructure to support nationwide adoption.

UN General Assembly Moves to Reform Misleading World Map Projections

    September 5, 2026

Educational geography classrooms display large physical world map charts on classroom walls. The initiative specifically targets the Mercator map projection, created in the 16th century by Flemish cartographer Gerardus Mercator for navigation at sea. Although it remains effective for maritime purposes, its mathematical scaling causes landmasses near the poles to appear much larger and those near the equator to seem smaller over time. As documented by the United Nations General Assembly, these distortions continue to influence educational textbooks, news broadcasts, digital maps, and government publications worldwide. During assembly sessions, international representatives recognized that cartographic distortions extend beyond technical issues into broader socioeconomic and cultural spheres. They acknowledged that visual inaccuracies shape public perceptions of the economic, political, and cultural importance of entire continents. The resolution endorses the use of equal-area projections, such as the Equal Earth map introduced in 2018, which accurately depicts continents in their true proportions.
